| Playing Through, a monthly message from Queens of the Greens
Golf will challenge event the hardiest souls. It takes a sustained physical effort to play 18 holes over a 4 to 5 hour period. Even harder, is the mental stamina required to rise again after taking an 8 or 9 on a particularly lousy hole. At that point it is very difficult not to get down on yourself. Bookstores are filled with golf self-help books and having read a number of them, I can attest that they do indeed shed some light on the mental aspects of the game. One thing is clear, negative thoughts do have an impact on your performance.
If you start with negative thoughts, when something bad happens it just proves you right and that is the opening in downward spiral. Standing over the next shot produces anxiety and doubt as to whether you will hit a good one and if you don’t your worst fears are confirmed. Relaxation and positive thinking are keys to having fun on the course.
Find the joy in being able to play at all. Find the joy in sharing time with some friends. Find the joy being outside and being thankful that your mortgage doesn’t rely on your golf ability. For you it is a game and not your livelihood. Be thankful you have the chance to play.
This Labor Day weekend, play a round of golf and donate $1 to the Patriot Golf Day fund at your local course. Ask about it at the course where you play. Funds provide educational scholarships for children and spouses of military personnel who were disabled or killed in action. You can read all about it at this website http://www.patriotgolfday.com/. If you are not playing during the Labor Day weekend, you can also donate online. Then when you complain about missing a shot, remember those who are missing limbs or family members.
You can positively have an impact on another life and maybe that positive thinking will help your next shot.
Have a safe Labor Day and God Bless America,
Queens of the Greens

Liz Moore, Queens Treasurer, presents $2500 donation to City of Hope represented by Julie Filkoff. Funds are raised at the annual Queens charity event and will be used for cancer research. In 2009, the event was held at Terra Lago in Indio on April 4, 2009. Thanks to all our sponsors and donors for making the 2009 event successful.
Queens of the Greens Golf Association was started in the Los Angeles area in 1996 to provide a golf group for social and competitive tournaments on weekends. Our group is ideal for working women who also like to play a variety of courses throughout the Southern California area. We are a non-profit, fun, social organization that organizes and promotes competitive golf experiences for amateur women golfers of all abilities.
Queens of the Greens also organizes charitable events for the benefit of breast cancer organizations. Our annual Palm Springs Charity Golf Tournament coincides with the Kraft Nabisco LPGA Championship in Palm Springs, CA. We welcome members and non-members to this event. In 2009, we donated $2,500. Over the past several years, Queens of the Greens Golf Club has donated more than $15,000 to City of Hope. Even, if you can't play you are welcome to donate money or items for auction. Individuals or businesses may also sponsor a hole. Contact a Board member to donate items for raffle or auction.
Benefits of joining Queens of the Greens Golf Club
- - Make new friends
- - Improve your game
- - Participate in competitive golf
- - Contribute to charitable events
The group meets on Saturday or Sunday, one weekend a month at golf courses throughout the Southern California area. Occasionally, the group conducts away tournaments. The tournaments are in accordance with the rules of golf and are competitive in nature. The group belongs to the Women's Public Links Golf Association and each golfer establishes and maintains a handicap with that organization.
Membership in the club is open to any woman over 18 with an understanding and practice of the rules of golf. Each member must comply with the rules and regulations of the USGA, must encourage proper golf etiquette and must show high standards of sportsmanship.
Application for membership is due to WPLGA by November 1 of each year for the following year. Once the membership is full, any prospective new members will be placed on a waitlist and can join if there are cancellations throughout the year. Non-members can participate in club activities if there is room available. Preference is given first to members and an additional fee is assessed for non members.
The club is governed by a Board of Directors. They are responsible for the policy, business and affairs of the club. The Board consists of a President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Tournament Chair, Membership/Handicap Chair, and Special Events Chair. The Board will meet as needed to conduct the affairs of the club. The Board will follow the established by-laws.
